Episode Description
In this episode of AEO Engine, discover how one brand achieved 37x traffic growth by shifting from SEO to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) for ChatGPT and Perplexity, with hard data on conversion rates and attribution gaps.
Key takeaways:
- 37x traffic growth resulted from AEO optimization for ChatGPT.
- Conversion rates improved significantly after AEO implementation.
- Attribution gaps were identified and reduced using AEO Engine tools.
- Perplexity and Google AI Overviews also respond to AEO strategies.
- AEO Engine provides actionable insights for AI search visibility.
Q: How can businesses replicate 37x traffic growth with ChatGPT?
A: By adopting Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) strategies that tailor content for AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Q: What is the key difference between SEO and AEO?
A: SEO optimizes for search engine rankings, while AEO optimizes for AI-generated answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
Q: What tools does AEO Engine offer for AI search optimization?
A: AEO Engine provides analytics, content optimization, and attribution tracking to improve visibility in AI search results.
Why this matters now in 2026: As AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews increasingly dominate how users find information, traditional SEO is no longer sufficient. Brands must adapt to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) to capture traffic from AI-generated answers. This episode features a case study from a brand that achieved 37x traffic growth by shifting focus to AEO, with concrete data on conversion rates and attribution gaps. The insights are based on research shared by @sho1nakagawa on X (source: x.com). AEO Engine helps businesses optimize for AI search, providing tools to analyze and improve visibility across multiple AI platforms. For marketers and business owners, understanding AEO is now critical to maintaining competitive advantage in AI-driven search.

[Host] Welcome to the A.E.O. Engine AI Search Show — the number one podcast for brands looking to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. I am your host, Aria Chen. Every day we bring you fresh episodes on A.E.O. tactics, S.E.O. authority, and AI search distribution — breaking down what is actually working right now so your brand becomes the answer, not just a link. Today we are diving into a case study that has been making the rounds: a brand that claims 37x traffic growth from ChatGPT by switching from traditional S.E.O. to A.E.O. My guest is Marcus Reid, ex-Google Ads, ex-martech founder, and a sharp analyst who has been tracking this shift. Marcus, welcome.
[Guest] Hey everyone, glad to be here. I have to say, the 37x number got my attention too — but I think the real story is what it reveals about how search is breaking apart.
[Host] Right. And I want to start with something I think a lot of our listeners have felt recently. You are in your analytics dashboard, and you see Google traffic flat or dropping. But there is a new referrer that says "ChatGPT" — and when you click, it is a real user who spent four minutes on your site and maybe even converted. You are happy but also confused: how did they find you? There is no search query, no keyword.
[Guest] Exactly. That moment is the hook. And there is a name for why it happened: Answer Engine Optimization, or A.E.O. Instead of optimizing for a search engine bot that ranks blue links, you optimize for an LLM that synthesizes an answer. The brand in this case — I think it was Glasp, though the exact source is a bit fuzzy — claims that after pivoting to A.E.O., their ChatGPT referral traffic grew 37x. Now, I could not find that exact figure in any of the primary research I checked, but I did find numbers that are almost as dramatic: ABI Research reported a 93% increase in AI referral traffic over 10 months. A Reddit thread claimed 1079% growth. And Webflow says 10% of their signups now come from AI discovery, growing 4x year-over-year.
[Host] So the magnitude is real, even if the exact multiple varies. Let us talk about what this brand actually did. What is the mechanism behind A.E.O.?
[Guest] The core shift is from satisfying Google's ranking signals to satisfying an LLM's extraction logic. Traditional S.E.O. cares about backlink quantity, keyword density, meta tags. A.E.O. cares about authority, clarity, and directness. One concrete tactic from the research: shift from quantity to quality in backlinks. AI models care more about the "clout" of the linking domain than the sheer number of links. Another tactic: structure your content as direct answers. Use Q&A sections, bullet points, lists — formats the LLM can easily parse. And here is something new: ChatGPT now includes prominently displayed clickable links in its answers. That is why referral traffic has spiked in the last three months.
[Host] That is a big change. A year ago, ChatGPT was a black hole for traffic — it gave answers with no attribution. Now it is sending real visitors. But how do you even measure this? Attribution is a mess.
[Guest] It is a mess. One Reddit discussion pointed out "attribution gaps can hide real impact because branded searches or hidden conversions may not be fully captured." So the 37x number could actually be undercounting the real effect. But it also means you cannot just look at your analytics and say "I got 100 visits from ChatGPT" — you need to track downstream branded searches and direct visits that originated from an AI answer.
[Host] That sounds like trying to count ghosts. But the data we do have on conversion rates is pretty eye-opening. Growth Unhinged reported that ChatGPT traffic converts at 24%, which is 6x higher than Google's 4%. Another source says ChatGPT traffic converts 31% better than organic Google. That is not just volume — that is quality.
[Guest] And that is why this matters beyond just a cool case study. If AI-referred visitors convert at 6x the rate of Google, then even a modest increase in AI traffic can have an outsized impact on revenue. But here is where I push back a little: I am not sure the 37x growth is replicable for everyone. It is likely an early-adopter advantage. As more brands adopt A.E.O., the LLMs will have more competing sources, and the conversion rates might normalize. I actually do not know if these numbers hold in six months.
[Host] Fair point. But the trend is undeniable. Google's own AI Overviews are absorbing clicks — impressions are steady, but clicks are dropping. That is from Grow & Convert's analysis. So the old S.E.O. model is not just being supplemented; it is being replaced. And that brings us to the real risk: if you are not optimizing for AI answers, you are not just missing traffic — you are losing control of what the AI says about your brand.
[Guest] Right. It is like that scene in Succession where Logan Roy hands over the company and suddenly everything changes. The search ecosystem is being handed to AI models, and they have different rules. The brands that move first will own the narrative. The ones that wait will be fighting for scraps.
[Host] That is exactly why we built A.E.O. Engine — to help brands dominate AI search results. We have seen clients achieve an average 920% lift in AI-driven traffic using our agentic S.E.O. systems. The same tactics from this case study — structured answers, authority signals, clickable link integration — are baked into our 100-Day Growth Framework. You can see the full approach at A.E.O. Engine dot A.I.
[Guest] And I think the key takeaway is not to panic, but to start. Pick one piece of high-value content, restructure it as a direct answer to a common question, and monitor your ChatGPT referral traffic over the next month. That is the minimum viable A.E.O. experiment.
[Host] Good advice. To wrap up: the shift from S.E.O. to A.E.O. is not a buzzword — it is a measurable, high-ROI strategy backed by real case studies and conversion data. Whether you see 37x or 4x, the direction is clear. Head to A.E.O. Engine dot A.I. to learn how we can help you get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Thanks for listening, and we will see you next time on the AI Search Show.
[Guest] Thanks, Aria.
