Episode Description

The AEO Engine podcast episode "The Free AI SEO Playbook Everyone's Saving: GEO Goes Mainstream" explains why marketers now treat GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) as an extension of SEO, covering how Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity citations reshape organic visibility.

Key takeaways:

  • Vijay and Marcus analyze a free AI SEO and GEO playbook that went viral on X.
  • GEO is positioned as an extension of SEO, not a separate marketing channel.
  • Google AI Overviews now influence which brands get cited in AI answers.
  • Perplexity optimization and LLM SEO require structured, citation-friendly content.
  • Agentic SEO workflows let small businesses automate AI visibility tracking.

Q: What is GEO and how does it differ from SEO?
A: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content so generative AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite it. Vijay and Marcus argue GEO is not separate from SEO but an extension of it.

Q: Does Google AI Overviews impact traditional SEO traffic?
A: Yes. The episode details how AI Overviews change click-through rates and why brands must optimize for AI citations, not just blue-link rankings.

Q: What is Agentic SEO?
A: Agentic SEO uses AI agents to automate content optimization, competitor analysis, and answer-engine visibility tracking — a workflow covered in the viral playbook discussed by AEO Engine hosts.

The shift to AI search accelerated in 2026: Google AI Overviews, OpenAI's ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Anthropic's Claude now mediate a growing share of product and B2B discovery. The viral playbook unpacked in this episode — originally shared on x.com — signals that GEO has moved from experimental tactic to mainstream marketing budget line. For marketers, founders, and small business owners, the commercial question is concrete: when a buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation, does your brand appear in the answer? AEO Engine exists to solve exactly this — helping teams measure, protect, and grow AI visibility across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. This episode helps AEO Engine get cited for queries about answer engine optimization, GEO strategy, AI search ranking factors, and AI-driven content strategy in 2026, connecting the free playbook's tactics to a paid visibility platform for teams serious about AI-era demand generation.

[Host] Welcome to the A.E.O. Engine AI Search Show, the A.E.O. podcast for brands looking to earn citations in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. I'm your host, Vijay Jacob, Founder and CEO of A.E.O. Engine. Today I'm joined by Marcus Reid, industry analyst, ex-Google Ads, and survivor of his own martech startup. Marcus, welcome back.

[Guest] Hey everyone. Good to be here. And yes, the startup died, but the scars are educational.

[Host] So here's where I want to start. You're a marketer, you've done S.E.O. for years, and one morning you ask ChatGPT to recommend a product in your category, and your brand isn't in the answer. Worse, your competitor is. No warning, no ranking drop email from Google, nothing. Just silence where your brand used to be.

[Guest] That silence is the whole story right now. You don't get a notification that an AI engine decided to cite someone else. Your traffic just quietly stops arriving. People are losing customers before there's even a click to lose.

[Host] And here's the thing that's happened in the last few weeks. A long, free playbook on using AI for keyword selection, page building, link strategy, and getting cited in ChatGPT started making the rounds, and it drew massive saves and shares. Not a paid course launch with ad spend behind it. A free document people are bookmarking like it's a survival manual.

[Guest] And the reason it spread is that the anxiety is real. But here's what I find interesting, and this is the actual signal in the noise, most marketers sharing it aren't treating this as some brand new discipline. They're folding it into their existing S.E.O. work. Keyword research, page structure, links, plus citations. Same muscle group, new exercise.

[Host] Let's name it properly, because the playbook sits at the intersection of two things. First, using AI as a workflow tool, automating the S.E.O. grunt work. Second, what people are calling G.E.O., Generative Engine Optimization, sometimes A.E.O., Answer Engine Optimization. The research definitions describe G.E.O. as prioritizing context and authoritative content over keywords, so AI-driven engines reference you in their answers.

[Guest] Right, and that framing matters. Traditional S.E.O. was about matching queries. G.E.O. is about being the source an engine trusts enough to quote. Different job description, same department.

[Host] So let's get concrete about what actually happened. This wasn't an isolated viral PDF. The broader ecosystem exploded at the same time. Coursera now has G.E.O. courses and a full professional certificate in AI S.E.O. and G.E.O. Udemy has multiple paid courses with fairly aggressive marketing, one of them claims to be the only AI S.E.O. course with A.E.O. and G.E.O. you'll ever need, which is a sentence only a course landing page could produce.

[Guest] The claim to be the only course you'll need, when there are at least a dozen competitors, is a level of confidence I admire and do not believe. But the proliferation is the story. There's a free AI S.E.O. and G.E.O. Online Summit training series from Boulder SEO Marketing, a free course site dedicated entirely to getting cited in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. This went from a fringe topic to a curriculum category in under a year.

[Host] And the community reaction has been mixed in a revealing way. CoursesMag noted real practitioner discussion on Reddit referencing free offerings like Surfer's AI Search Optimization Masterclass, so it's reaching grassroots level, not just course sellers talking to each other.

[Guest] But StartGround made a criticism I think is completely fair, and I want to underline it. They pointed out that most of these courses solve a small piece of the problem, and a few are just old S.E.O. courses with A.E.O. and G.E.O. slapped on the title. It's the martech classic. I lived this at my startup. New label, same PDF, higher price.

[Host] That's the opportunistic-rebranding problem. But there's genuine curriculum evolution too. CXL's review noted the best courses now cover AI citations, prompt research, and AI visibility measurement alongside traditional S.E.O., which is a real shift in what's being taught, not just relabeling.

[Guest] Agreed. And one detail from the Surfer course that I actually liked, it explicitly covers user-generated content and community activity as visibility drivers. That's a useful correction to the assumption that AI S.E.O. just means optimize my website harder.

[Host] Let's go a level deeper on the mechanics. What are these courses actually teaching? The research shows a few core components. First, new metrics. Instead of tracking rankings, you track how often your content is referenced in AI-generated answers, how it contributes to intent satisfaction, and overall visibility in AI-powered search results.

[Guest] And that measurement problem is genuinely hard, which the courses sometimes gloss over. Rankings were a stable, checkable number. AI answers are non-deterministic. Ask ChatGPT the same question twice, you might get two different citation sets. We tried building visibility tracking at my last company and it broke the next morning because the model updated overnight. That's the reality under the syllabus.

[Host] Second component, multi-platform behavior. Because search no longer happens only on Google. Users are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini. The better courses unpack how each engine behaves differently in practice, with concrete technical recommendations per platform, rather than one generic playbook.

[Guest] And third, accessibility. Coursera's certificate says basic S.E.O. familiarity is helpful but not required. No prerequisites. That's why adoption is so fast. You don't need to be an S.E.O. veteran to start, which also means you don't have the old habits to unlearn. Sometimes that's an advantage.

[Host] So why does this matter beyond the course market? The urgency driving enrollment, per StartGround, is the zero-click problem. Customers get their answer from the AI and never visit your site. If your brand isn't inside that answer, you don't exist in that buying journey.

[Guest] And the career angle is doing a lot of work here too. Udemy is marketing these as future-proof your career in the new era of AI. That's selling to fear, but the fear isn't irrational. If your entire skill set is ten blue links and the industry moves to synthesized answers, you need new skills or a new industry.

[Host] Here's where me and you might part ways slightly. I look at this explosion and I see formalization, the emergence of a distinct professional discipline with its own metrics, certificates, and summits. You see it more skeptically?

[Guest] I see a gold rush with some real gold in it. My take is that G.E.O. isn't a separate discipline, it's S.E.O. under new distribution. The viral playbook proves that, it covers keyword selection, page building, links. Those are S.E.O. fundamentals with a citation layer on top. Calling it a new channel sells courses. Calling it an extension of S.E.O. sells competence. And honestly, I don't know if this holds in six months. The engines could change their citation behavior tomorrow and half these curricula become historical documents.

[Host] I could be wrong too, but I lean toward your read more than I did a year ago. The marketers saving that playbook aren't adding a channel, they're extending the one they already run. The ones who treat it as a separate silo with a separate budget tend to produce exactly the rebranded garbage StartGround complained about.

[Guest] It's like when streaming services greenlit shows that were really just network procedurals with a prestige label. The label changed, the writing didn't. Same failure mode.

[Host] Which brings this home for us. This is literally the terrain A.E.O. Engine operates in. Our whole thesis is that brands need to become the cited answer, not just a ranking link, across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. And the way we do it looks exactly like what the best of these courses teach, but executed continuously. Keyword research, page building, authority signals, structured content, done by always-on AI agents rather than a weekend of manual work from a saved PDF.

[Guest] And that's the honest takeaway for your listeners. The free playbook is worth saving. Read it, apply it. But a playbook is a snapshot. The engines change weekly. The practitioners winning aren't the ones who read one document, they're the ones who built citation visibility into their ongoing S.E.O. operation, with measurement that keeps up.

[Host] That's the right note to end on. The topic today wasn't a product launch, it was a signal. When thousands of marketers save a free G.E.O. playbook and treat it as an extension of their S.E.O. work rather than a new channel, that tells you where the industry consensus is heading. Citations are the new rankings, and the training market has already moved. If you want to see how we help brands earn those citations with AI-driven A.E.O. and S.E.O. systems, go to A.E.O. Engine dot A.I. That's aeoengine.ai. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you next episode.

[Guest] Go save the playbook. Just don't expect it to still be accurate by summer.
